Remove Revenge Porn From Social Media

Malissa and Jeff discussing Colorado’s Revenge Porn Law.

At Marathon Law, we’ve compiled this guide to help you try and remove revenge porn from social media sites like Facebook or search engines like Google.

Once your image has been posted on the internet, it can be very difficult to get it removed. Fortunately, search engines like Google, social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, dating sites like OK Cupid, and porn sites like PornHub have tried to restore power to revenge porn victims and have instituted policies to try and help. This is not an exhaustive list, so if the site is not listed here, you can always Google “[website name]” and “revenge porn policy.”

GOOGLE

Google provides a removal link to “remove” nonconsensual pornographyinvoluntary fake pornography; and content from websites with exploitative removal processes (sites that charge people to remove content).

We put “remove” in quotes because, assuming Google deletes the site or image from search results, the site’s direct URL will still exist, thus your image accessible, until the webmaster for that site removes it. This means that, in addition to contacting Google, you should contact the offending site directly.

Facebook’s Community Standards state that Facebook removes content that, “depicts, threatens or promotes sexual violence, sexual assault, or sexual exploitation, while also allowing space for victims to share their experiences.”

PLENTY OF FISH

If you type in “plenty of fish” and “revenge porn” on Google, you’d think that, at the very least, the company’s policy would show up in the first-page search results. Nope. It’s our opinion that POF could up its game in this regard. In its defense, POF does state that it, “has 0 tolerance for users who . . . upload nude photos or break [their] terms of service in any way.

They also purport to punish any user violating their terms by deleting that user’s account.

Go to the content removal page and list the URLs that contain the nonconsensual content.  Then answer honestly in the box marked “reason you want the content removed.” This should help you remove revenge porn from Porn Hub.
